Helping Stamp Out Hunger in Southern Nevada is as easy as leaving a bag of non-perishable food items at your mailbox on Saturday, May 11, 2013 for your letter carrier.
Or you can visit your local Albertsons Sav-on Pharmacy between Friday, May 3 and Sunday, May 12 to purchase a pre-packaged bag of non-perishable food. Shoppers can also donate $1, $5 or $10 at the register. A “stamp” will be hung in honor of each donation.
Last year, this collaborative effort collected more than 404,000 pounds of food in Southern Nevada that was distributed to more than twenty local food pantries to help those in our community who struggle with hunger. This year, organizers hope to hit a half-million pounds.
“Every second Saturday in May, letter carriers around the nation pick up non-perishable food donations along with the mail,” said Glenn Norton, President of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 2502, which represents Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson and Boulder City. “Here in Southern Nevada, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is a true community effort thanks to the strong support of our corporate and non-profit partners, along with the hundreds of volunteers who help unload trucks and sort food at Valley post offices.”
Partners for the local 2013 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive include the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 2502, United States Post Office, Albertsons Sav-on, Valpack of Las Vegas, United Way of Southern Nevada, AFL-CIO, Feeding America, and Campbell’s.
The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. Last year, Americans generously donated more than 70 million pounds of food.
